OPINION | India's Smartphone Affordability Shift: Why Value Matters More Than Price

For years, affordability was one of the defining strengths of India's smartphone market. Millions of consumers came online through devices that made technology accessible, powering everything from digital payments and education to entertainment and entrepreneurship. Smartphones quickly became the country's most important personal computing device. Today, that equation is changing. Smartphones are becoming more capable than ever before, but they're also becoming more expensive. Advanced processors, AI capabilities, improved cameras, better displays, larger batteries and longer software support have significantly raised the cost of building modern smartphones. At the same time, consumers are keeping their devices for longer, making every purchase a far more considered decision. This shift has fundamentally changed what affordability means. Affordability is no longer simply about finding the lowest-priced smartphone. It is about understanding how much value a device continues to deliver over three or four years of ownership. ALSO READ: Poco X8 Pro Max, Poco X8 Pro Review: Poco Trades Hype For Substance, And It Works Forces Reshaping Smartphone Affordability Across the industry, average selling prices continue to rise while replacement cycles grow longer. This isn't simply the result of premiumisation. It's also being driven by structural changes across the technology ecosystem. Growing demand for advanced semiconductors, memory, AI infrastructure and cloud computing has increased component costs, while investments in software, security updates and AI experiences have added further pressure on manufacturers. Currency fluctuations, supply chain dynamics and rising consumer expectations around durability and long-term software support have further contributed to the shift. These changes affect every price segment, not just flagship devices. Rise Of The Value-Conscious Consumer The most interesting transformation, however, is happening on the consumer side. Indian smartphone buyers have become some of the most informed technology consumers in the world. Before making a purchase, they compare benchmark scores, watch detailed reviews, evaluate real-world gaming performance, assess battery endurance and understand software support commitments. Instead of asking, "What's the cheapest phone I can buy?" they're increasingly asking, "Will this device still perform well three or four years from now?" That is a much more meaningful conversation. Performance today isn't defined by how fast a phone feels on launch day. It's about sustained performance after hundreds of charging cycles, consistent software optimisation, efficient thermal management and reliable battery health throughout the ownership journey. Consumers are evaluating the total value they receive over time rather than simply the upfront purchase price. ALSO READ: Poco F7 Vs iQOO Neo 10: Clash Of The Mid-Range Titans. Which One Should You Buy? Innovation Must Deliver Long-Term Value This evolution is encouraging because it rewards meaningful innovation over specification races. For brands, affordability can no longer be treated as the opposite of innovation. In many ways, affordability itself has become an innovation challenge. The objective is no longer to build the cheapest smartphone possible. It is to maximise the value delivered for every rupee a consumer spends. That requires smarter engineering decisions, tighter hardware and software integration, efficient product planning and a clear understanding of what consumers genuinely prioritise. It also means focusing on features that improve everyday usage rather than simply adding specifications for marketing value. At POCO, this philosophy has always guided our approach to product development. We've believed that flagship-grade performance shouldn't be reserved for flagship price points. Instead, innovation should focus on the experiences that matter most to users, whether that's sustained performance, efficient cooling, dependable battery life, smoother gaming, intelligent software optimisation or long-term reliability. India's Expectations Are Raising The Bar This conversation is especially relevant in India, where smartphones are no longer optional consumer electronics. For millions of people, they are the primary gateway to education, financial services, healthcare, entertainment, content creation and work. As smartphones become increasingly central to everyday life, expectations naturally become higher. Consumers are not simply buying a device. They're investing in a digital companion they expect to rely on every day for several years. That shift is pushing the industry to think differently about product development. Success will depend not only on introducing new technologies but also on making those technologies accessible, dependable and relevant over a longer ownership cycle. The Next Battle Will Be Won On Value The next chapter of smartphone affordability won't be determined by who offers the lowest price. It will be defined by who delivers the strongest long-term value. The brands that earn lasting consumer trust will be those that combine meaningful innovation with accessible pricing, ensuring every upgrade delivers a noticeable improvement without asking consumers to pay for features they don't truly need. At POCO, we've always believed that true affordability isn't about reducing price. It's about maximising performance-per-rupee so that every investment continues to deliver value long after the day of purchase. Ultimately, the future of affordability isn't about making smartphones cheaper. It's about making every rupee work harder through better performance, greater reliability and an ownership experience that stands the test of time. Too Much AI Slop On LinkedIn? Users Are Turning To Messy, Human Posts For Better Reach

Artificial intelligence (AI) may have become a common tool for creating content on LinkedIn, but growing evidence suggests that users are increasingly gravitating toward posts that feel genuinely human. As AI-generated content floods the professional networking platform, some creators and businesses are deliberately moving away from automation in an effort to reconnect with audiences and improve engagement. A new analysis, reported by Business Insider, indicates that a substantial share of content on LinkedIn is now being generated by artificial intelligence, making it harder for original voices to stand out. ALSO READ: LinkedIn Premium Worth Rs 2,997 Is Free For Users Using This SIM AI Content Dominates LinkedIn Posts Research conducted by Pangram, a company that specialises in identifying AI-generated text, found that LinkedIn has the highest proportion of AI-created content among major online platforms it tracks. According to the study, around 41 per cent of long-form posts and 30 per cent of short-form posts on LinkedIn appear to be generated by AI tools. These figures place the platform ahead of other popular services monitored by Pangram, including X, Reddit, Substack and Medium. The findings highlight how rapidly AI writing tools have become integrated into professional communication, allowing users to create posts faster and at scale. However, the widespread use of such tools is also making AI-generated writing easier for readers to recognise. Businesses Shift Back To Human-Written Content The growing prevalence of automated content has prompted some organisations to rethink their social media strategies. Stephen Bartlett, founder of FlightStory, is among those who have reportedly moved away from AI-generated posts. His company has abandoned the use of artificial intelligence for writing LinkedIn content after noticing that audiences were becoming less responsive to automated messaging. Explaining the shift, FlightStory’s director of business development, Christiana Brenton, said, "AI mistakes are really noticeable. When the world wobbles to the left, opportunity lies to the right. What will stand out on LinkedIn now more than ever? Real words written by a human." According to Brenton, Bartlett’s LinkedIn posts are now written entirely by hand. The company even avoids aggressively editing small spelling errors or minor inaccuracies, believing that such imperfections help demonstrate authenticity and make content feel more relatable to readers. The strategy has reportedly delivered stronger audience engagement and broader reach compared to heavily AI-assisted content. ALSO READ: LinkedIn Row Erupts As Founder Defends ‘No Notice’ Culture, Fires Employee On WhatsApp LinkedIn Faces AI Authenticity Challenge The trend also places LinkedIn in a complicated position. The platform actively promotes AI-powered tools that help users refine and generate content while composing posts. At the same time, LinkedIn has signalled concerns about what is often described as "AI slop" which refers to low-quality, mass-produced content generated with minimal effort and little original insight. This creates a balancing act for the platform. While AI features can help professionals communicate more efficiently, excessive reliance on automated writing risks making feeds repetitive and less valuable for users seeking unique perspectives. As AI-generated content becomes more common, authenticity may emerge as a key differentiator. For many creators and businesses, the new challenge is no longer producing content quickly, but ensuring it feels genuinely human.

Musk Vs Altman Reloaded: Apple Lawsuit Triggers Fresh AI Billionaire Brawl On X

Musk Vs Altman: The long-running rivalry between Elon Musk and Sam Altman has flared up once again, with the latest exchange unfolding on social media after Apple launched a lawsuit against OpenAI and its hardware partner io. The legal battle has reignited tensions between the two tech leaders, who have spent years publicly disagreeing over the future of artificial intelligence, OpenAI's transformation, and the broader AI industry. Apple’s Legal Action Puts OpenAI Under Spotlight Apple recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, AI hardware startup io, and two former Apple employees, alleging that trade secrets were improperly taken from the iPhone maker. The case has attracted significant attention because io is led by renowned former Apple designer Jony Ive. OpenAI acquired the company last year as part of its push into AI-powered consumer hardware products. Responding to the allegations, OpenAI dismissed any suggestion of wrongdoing. In a statement, the company said it has no interest in using other companies' proprietary information. The lawsuit quickly became a talking point across the tech industry, drawing commentary from Elon Musk, who has frequently criticised OpenAI and its leadership. ALSO READ: ChatGPT Maker OpenAI Takes Big Step Towards Historic IPO Musk & Altman Exchange Sharp Remarks Musk used the controversy to target OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, continuing a pattern of public criticism that has become increasingly common in recent years. Altman responded with a sarcastic post, linking Musk's renewed attention to the performance of OpenAI's latest AI model. "Many benchmarks indicate that the 5.6 sol is now the best model in the world," Altman wrote on X. He then added that the strongest sign of its success was that "Elon is obsessed with me again." there are a lot of benchmarks that suggest 5.6 sol is the best model in the world right now, but the most reliable way to tell is that elon is obsessed with me again — Sam Altman (@sama) July 11, 2026 The exchange escalated further when Altman fired back at Musk, writing: "Dude, you’re the one selling short-term data centers in space to public market investors." Musk responded by saying SpaceX would begin "launching them" next year. He also joked that Altman could visit the company if his "parole officer" would allow it. there are a lot of benchmarks that suggest 5.6 sol is the best model in the world right now, but the most reliable way to tell is that elon is obsessed with me again — Sam Altman (@sama) July 11, 2026 Years of Tension Between OpenAI Co-Founders The latest clash is another chapter in a dispute that stretches back several years. Musk and Altman were among the co-founders of OpenAI in 2015. However, disagreements over leadership, funding and the company's direction eventually led to a split between the two. In 2024, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, Altman and OpenAI president Greg Brockman. He alleged that the organisation had betrayed its original charitable mission after evolving into a for-profit business despite being established as a nonprofit entity. A federal jury ruled against Musk earlier this year. Following the verdict, Musk said he intended to appeal. ALSO READ: Sam Altman Apologises After OpenAI Fails To Flag Police Before Fatal Canada Shooting Rival AI Ambitions Continue To Fuel Conflict The feud has intensified since Musk launched xAI in 2023, creating a direct competitor to OpenAI in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence market. Over the weekend, Musk again referenced the Apple lawsuit while attacking Altman on X, posting: "After stealing an open source charity, you stole all of Apple’s phone technology!" As of the time the remarks were posted, Altman had not publicly responded to that latest criticism. With OpenAI facing legal scrutiny from Apple and competition in the AI sector growing fiercer, the increasingly personal rivalry between Musk and Altman shows little sign of cooling down.

Who Will Replace Fleming At CSK? This IPL Coach Emerges As Contender

CSK New IPL Coach: Chennai Super Kings are searching for a new chapter after bringing an end to Stephen Fleming's remarkable 17-year stint as head coach. With one of the Indian Premier League's most coveted coaching positions now vacant, attention has quickly shifted to the leading candidates, and a familiar name has reportedly moved to the front of the queue. According to a report by the Times of India, Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani has emerged as a contender to succeed the former New Zealand captain at the five-time IPL champions. Hemang Badani Could Replace Stephen Fleming  Hemang Badani has been part of Delhi Capitals' coaching setup over the last two IPL campaigns. Under his guidance, Delhi finished fifth in 2025 before ending sixth in the 2026 season, narrowly missing qualification for the playoffs in his debut year. Read More: End Of An Era! Although an IPL playoff appearance has eluded him so far, the former India batter has already tasted coaching success after guiding his side to an ILT20 title. Big Shoes To Fill At CSK Replacing Fleming will be no easy task. The former New Zealand skipper oversaw one of the most successful coaching tenures in IPL history, helping Chennai Super Kings establish themselves as one of the league's dominant forces. However, recent campaigns have fallen below the franchise's lofty standards. CSK narrowly missed the playoffs in 2024 before enduring back-to-back disappointing seasons, finishing at the bottom of the table in 2025 and eighth in 2026. With a fresh coaching appointment expected in the coming weeks, CSK will be hoping the next man in charge can restore the franchise to title contention.

Nissan Says India Isn't Ready For EVs Yet, Electric Car Launch Likely Around 2028

Demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in India continues to grow, prompting several major car manufacturers to strengthen their presence in the segment. However, Nissan believes the Indian market is not yet fully prepared for widespread EV adoption. The company says it will not rush into launching electric cars simply to follow the trend and will instead enter the market only when the timing and demand are right. According to Massimiliano Messina, Chairman of Nissan's EMEA and Oceania region, the company could begin introducing electric vehicles in India around 2028. However, no specific model, production facility or launch timeline has been confirmed. Nissan maintains that it will only launch EVs once the market is mature enough and customer demand reaches the required level. ALSO READ: Planning To Buy An SUV? These 3 Upcoming Midsize Models Could Be Worth Waiting For Company Focused On Expanding Its Portfolio Nissan believes that petrol and CNG vehicles currently remain the preferred choice for most Indian buyers. As a result, the company plans to strengthen its existing portfolio before introducing electric models. To achieve this, Nissan intends to launch new petrol, CNG and automatic variants to boost sales and broaden its customer base. The company believes this strategy will help establish a stronger market presence before entering the EV segment. Nissan also noted that the share of electric vehicles in India has been steadily increasing. While EVs previously accounted for around 4% of the market, that figure has now risen to approximately 6% to 8%. Despite this growth, the company believes the increase has been significantly influenced by government policies, fuel-efficiency regulations, manufacturer targets and incentive schemes. Therefore, it does not intend to make investment decisions based solely on the current market figures. Expansion Plans For 2027 For several years, Nissan operated in India with a limited product portfolio, with the Magnite serving as its primary offering. This restricted line-up affected the company's sales performance. The automaker is now working to expand its range of vehicles. It has recently introduced the Gravite MPV and the new Tekton SUV. In addition, Nissan is preparing to launch a new seven-seater C-segment SUV in early 2027. Through these new models, the company aims to strengthen its position in the Indian automotive market. ALSO READ: Tata Sierra EV QWD Review: Best Electric SUV From India? India Remains A Key Export Hub Nissan views India not only as an important domestic market but also as a major export base. The Magnite is already exported from India to several international markets, allowing the company to maximise the utilisation of its Chennai manufacturing plant and supply chain. According to Nissan, any future model will be considered successful only if it demonstrates strong potential in both the domestic market and export markets.

After CSK finished runners-up that year, he was appointed head coach ahead of the 2009 campaign. What followed was one of the most decorated coaching tenures in IPL history. Working alongside Dhoni, Fleming guided Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles while also helping the franchise lift two Champions League T20 crowns. Despite the sustained success, recent seasons proved challenging. CSK struggled to maintain their usual standards after the gradual leadership transition from Dhoni to Ruturaj Gaikwad, prompting a period of rebuilding for the franchise. Although his tenure has now concluded, Fleming leaves behind an unmatched legacy at Chennai Super Kings, having helped shape the team's identity, culture and sustained excellence across nearly two decades of IPL cricket.

Google Drive Alert Exposes Obscene Videos Of Family Women, Kanpur Teen Under Arrest: What Google Actually Monitors

A 19-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur has been arrested after Google's automated safety systems detected alleged child sexual abuse material stored on his Google Drive account, bringing renewed attention to how cloud platforms monitor illegal content and what that means for user privacy. Police said the accused allegedly recorded obscene videos involving female relatives and girls from his neighbourhood, some of whom were minors. The material was reportedly uploaded to Google Drive, where it was identified by Google's safety mechanisms and reported to authorities. How Google Alerted Authorities According to investigators, Google's systems detected content suspected to be child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on the user's cloud storage account. The company subsequently suspended the account and shared information through established reporting channels used to combat online child exploitation. The alert eventually reached India's National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, prompting the Kanpur cyber cell and local police to launch a technical investigation. Officials said the information provided through the alert included details linked to the account, which helped investigators trace the suspect. Authorities also relied on digital evidence such as the IP address and the mobile phone's IMEI number to establish the user's identity. Following the investigation, police arrested the accused and seized the device allegedly used to record the videos. Investigators have sent the seized phone and other electronic evidence for forensic analysis. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Authorities are also examining whether the videos remained confined to the Google Drive account or were shared with any other individuals or platforms. 'Fun Run Is Over': Sanjay Manjrekar's Explosive 'IPL Make-Up' Verdict After India's T20 Humiliation

Sanjay Manjrekar IPL Remark: India's disastrous T20I tour of Ireland and England has reignited debate over whether the Indian Premier League is adequately preparing batsmen for overseas conditions. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes the blame should not fall solely on the players, arguing that the structure and conditions of the IPL deserve closer scrutiny following India's recent failures. The defending T20 world champions suffered consecutive series defeats, first going down 0-2 against Ireland before being comprehensively beaten 4-0 by England. Manjrekar Points Finger At IPL Challenge is for the selectors to imagine Indian batters without the heavy IPL make up on & pick only those for India. A lot of T20 cricket will be overseas now. The home fun run is over. — Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) July 12, 2026 Taking to X, Manjrekar suggested that India's struggles stem from a system that rewards a style of batting which does not always translate to overseas cricket. Read More: Sachin Tendulkar Applauds Jannik Sinner's Champion Mindset After Wimbledon Win "The easy thing would be is to hold players responsible for this overseas T20 setback. The right thing would be is to hold those responsible who have made IPL such, that it puts a heavy make up on Indian batsmen." Challenge is for the selectors to imagine Indian batters without the heavy IPL make up on & pick only those for India. A lot of T20 cricket will be overseas now. The home fun run is over. — Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) July 12, 2026 He also urged the selectors to evaluate players beyond their IPL performances while preparing squads for overseas assignments. "Challenge is for the selectors to imagine Indian batsmen without the heavy IPL make up on & pick only those for India. A lot of T20 cricket will be overseas now. The home fun run is over." India's Overseas Struggles Raise Fresh Questions India's defeat in Ireland marked their first T20I series or tournament loss in three years, and the England whitewash only intensified concerns over the team's batting approach. The IPL has been criticised for producing batting-friendly surfaces, especially in the last couple of seasons, short boundaries and conditions that encourage aggressive strokeplay. While those factors have helped create entertaining cricket, critics argue they do little to prepare batsmen for overseas pitches where movement, bounce and disciplined bowling demand greater adaptability.

Tata Sierra EV QWD Review: Best Electric SUV From India?

Plenty of hopes rest on the Sierra EV and carrying the Sierra name is also the arrival of AWD which brings it closer to its original namesake. However, nostalgia aside, is the Sierra EV worth the hype? Here is our drive review. Let's get straight to it. We only drove the top spec Sierra EV QWD which means AWD and two electric motors which develop more than 300 bhp (313) and 500Nm torque. It's also got a large 75kwh battery pack which has a claimed range of 624km.   Performance And Driving Experience With two motors you would expect performance to be massive and it is. Yet the power delivery is beautifully linear and it's not sudden or abrupt. Even in the city more the way it builds speed is something not seen on any other EV in its segment and Sport more it just flies. Performance is fantastic with 0-100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds. There is also a boost mode which unlocks the most dynamic side of the car. However, in every day driving, you can actually enjoy the performance and it's not just for show at a drag strip. Instant overtaking or smooth city driving is there which helps. Plus the visibility is good and you sit high while the steering is light too. Compared to the ICE, the EV version to me has a more pliant ride quality and feels more settled. Plus the lack of noise and the smooth nature helps. With spirited driving, range will be affected but expect it to be around 450-500 km realistically. ALSO READ: Mercedes-Benz India Maintains Its Lead Over Arch Rival BMW In H1 Sales We feel the way the Sierra feels mature and how it can handle 300 plus bhp is commendable but whether it needs this much power is also another matter. The ground clearance of 205mm also means you won't find any issues with the car and it performed great off-road of which there will be a separate review. We did notice the regenerative braking to be mild and not strong but brakes overall were good enough. Features, Technology And Cabin Tata has given plenty of tech here and aside from the triple screens there is an useful HUD which is even better than some luxury cars, a fantastic audio system, games to play when charging, a large panoramic sunroof, dual powered seats, Dolby Atmos, rear sunblinds, powered tailgate and more. Ventilated seats are offered too but they are positioned oddly out of sight. Unlike the Harrier, ergonomics are an improvement and storage is ample. The passenger screen nearly has all of the features so that they are not bored but it does become a distraction for the driver with no filter. The cabin design and fit/finish is as per class standard and looks premium too.  New to the QWD is also the V2V/V2L plus a 540 degree camera which shows the under side of the car. Finally there is the auto park and summon mode where you uss the key to move the car like on the Harrier.  Space meanwhile is the same while at the rear there is a flat floor and headroom/legroom is pretty good. Verdict Yes, it seems the EV Sierra is even more desirable and to us, is the most complete product yet from Tata. The performance is there along with ample range, tech and features plus enough toughness plus practicality. It happens to be the Jack of all trades and masters a few too. That said, we feel it it is too expensive at Rs 26 lakh and that's its biggest shortcomings more than anything else as it brings itself too close to the bigger Harrier EV. That said, it is indeed the most capable EV right now at this price. What we like- Performance, range, features, tech, capability  What we don't - Expensive

Virat Kohli 'Secretly Tracked' At Private Meeting In London; Cox Reveals Shocking Incident

England batsman Jordan Cox has revealed that India batsman Virat Kohli was photographed without his knowledge during a private meeting in London last month. The two players, who shared a dressing room during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's title-winning Indian Premier League campaign, met at a cafe shortly before Cox made his Test debut against New Zealand at The Oval. Privacy Concerns For Kohli The incident occurred while both players attempted to maintain a low profile in public. Pictures of the interaction circulated rapidly across social media channels shortly after the meeting concluded. Speaking to The Guardian, Cox expressed his surprise at the sudden online appearance of the private encounter. The young batsman detailed how quickly the images surfaced despite the quiet setting. But then, about two hours later, he's texting me, going, 'Have you seen all these photos?' I was like 'what the hell?'" Cox told The Guardian. MG Hector Hawk EV To Have More Than 500 Km Range But Will Also Have A PHEV Version

JSW MG is all set to unveil its big new launch for India and it will be called the Hector Hawk most probably. The Hector Hawk is the MG Starlight 560 in PHEV and EV form. In EV form the SUV will be sold probably with a 56.7kWh battery with a single front electric motor. The range would be upwards of 500km as well. PHEV Could Be the Biggest Talking Point However, not just the EV as the PHEV variant would be more talked about considering how it will be the first of its kind for the segment. The PHEV is a plug-in hybrid which means it can be charged but also uses a petrol engine. The engine in question is a 1.5l unit along with a 20.5kWh battery. Power here would be around 197bhp. In electric mode it can go up to 100km which means all the inter-city driving would be done within the EV mode. This will be the first plug-in hybrid and the advantage would be the fact that it is an EV in some aspects but also not just requiring charging as you need to fuel it as well.
