'I Just Need An Opportunity' Describing his struggle, the graduate wrote, "Hey everyone, I’m a 2026 B.Tech graduate, and I’ve been desperately trying to find a job. In the last month alone, I’ve applied to over 500 roles through LinkedIn, job portals, company career pages, and pretty much everywhere else I could find. I haven’t managed to get even a single interview." I applied to 500+ jobs in the last month and got 0 interviews. These venues ignored multiple warnings from both the Green Tribunal and the Central Ground Water Authority. Consequently, the bench stopped all athletic operations until the associations present formal explanations. The legal action stems from an execution application filed by applicant Haider Ali against structural water mismanagement. The original petition objected to authorities using commercial drinking water resources to irrigate cricket outfields. The tribunal mandates that state associations must substitute fresh water with treated effluent from local treatment facilities. Selective Compliance Spares Competitor Venues The environmental tribunal had previously served identical closure warnings to six national cricket venues in April. However, three international facilities managed to avoid the operational ban by communicating with the regulatory agency. Their legal representatives submitted preliminary compliance details to the central authority before the deadline.  New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium and Lucknow’s Ekana Cricket Stadium submitted formal responses. The capital venue is currently compiling additional consumption statistics requested by federal environmental inspectors. Meanwhile, Barabati Stadium in Cuttack secured a four-week extension to present its complete infrastructure plan.  Counsel representing the applicant established that the three suspended venues repeatedly refused to participate in the hearings. Financial penalties failed to force the state cricket associations to disclose their primary water sources. The absolute lack of institutional engagement left the tribunal with no alternative but closure. Judicial Focus On Domestic Water Security In the official ruling, NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava highlighted the severe water deficits affecting multiple domestic sectors. The chairperson explained the reasoning behind the immediate suspensions by pointing out the uncooperative stance of the venues. The administration expected sports bodies to implement immediate corrective engineering adjustments.   The official statement from the National Green Tribunal confirmed the finality of the operational freeze: "Having regard to the serious issue of water shortage in different areas of the country, we were expecting that these stadiums will duly respond to the tribunal's notice and will take appropriate corrective measures, but in spite of repeated notices not only from the tribunal but also from the CGWA, these three stadiums have not cared to file any response. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Friday acknowledged that motorists may experience a 3-5 per cent reduction in fuel economy in some vehicles running on E20 petrol. However, it maintained that mileage is only one aspect of fuel performance, highlighting several technical and environmental advantages of higher ethanol blending. According to the ministry, E20 fuel delivers a higher octane rating, improved anti-knock properties, faster combustion, smoother acceleration, better pickup and cleaner engine operation compared with conventional petrol. The clarification comes amid ongoing discussions around the nationwide rollout of petrol blended with 20 per cent ethanol. Govt Says E20 Rollout Followed Extensive Industry Consultations The ministry said the transition to E20 was not implemented abruptly and was preceded by years of consultations with stakeholders across the automotive and fuel sectors, reported IANS. It noted that discussions on E10 compatibility began as early as 2020-21, enabling India to achieve its target of 10 per cent ethanol blending (E10) in June 2022, five months ahead of the timeline set under the Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2020-21. For the E20 programme, the consultation process was even more comprehensive, the ministry said. Automobile manufacturers, component suppliers, testing agencies and research institutions were all involved, while the Inter-Ministerial Committee's (IMC) roadmap had remained in the public domain since 2021. According to the ministry, the roadmap provided a calibrated approach towards achieving 20 per cent ethanol blending. Testing covered material compatibility, engine calibration, fuel systems, drivability, durability, emissions and fuel efficiency to ensure vehicles were prepared for the transition. It further stated that automobile manufacturers had been actively involved throughout the process and had supported the rollout only after being satisfied with the outcomes. "Had automobile manufacturers not been fully satisfied with the results, they would never have stood behind the product or honoured vehicle warranties," the ministry said in its statement. It added that virtually every manufacturer currently continues to honour warranties for both older and newer vehicles because they were part of the consultation process. Field Data Shows No Major Issues, Says Ministry Citing industry feedback, the ministry said Maruti Suzuki serviced 2.84 crore vehicles during FY 2025-26, including 1.5 crore older vehicles that were not E20-certified, and reported no E20-related corrosion, abnormal wear or damage to component life. It added that Hero MotoCorp had reported similar experiences in real-world usage. According to the ministry, such field data provides stronger evidence than isolated anecdotal claims regarding the impact of ethanol-blended fuel. Cleaner Fuel With Lower Carbon Emissions Beyond vehicle performance, the ministry highlighted E20's environmental benefits. It said E20 fuel generates negligible particulate emissions while reducing lifecycle carbon emissions by around 40 per cent. "In short, it is a cleaner, higher-quality and more efficient fuel than either E10 or pure petrol," the ministry stated. Premium petrol, it explained, is a niche product sold in limited volumes and at a higher price because specialised performance-enhancing additives are blended into the fuel. Maintaining separate nationwide distribution networks for pure petrol, E10 and E20 would be significantly more complex than supplying premium fuels, the ministry noted. The ministry also underlined the scale of investment supporting India's ethanol blending programme. According to the statement, public sector banks have financed nearly Rs 1 lakh crore annually in ethanol production and related infrastructure over recent years. These investments have helped establish dedicated ethanol plants, distilleries, storage facilities and logistics networks required to meet the country's blending targets.

India-UK Trade Deal: Import Duty On UK Cars Cut, Here's What Changes From July 15

India has laid down the framework for importers seeking concessional customs duty on passenger cars and goods vehicles from the United Kingdom under the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which comes into force on July 15. According to a public notice issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on July 9, eligible importers will be able to apply for Tariff Rate Quotas (TRQs), allowing a specified number of vehicles to be imported at lower customs duties. The move operationalises the automotive provisions of the bilateral trade pact, under which import duties on eligible UK-built vehicles will be reduced in phases, subject to annual quotas. Duty Cuts to Be Linked to Import Quotas Under CETA, India has agreed to reduce import duties on eligible automotive imports from around 110 per cent to 10 per cent over a phased period, while both countries will operate quota-based access for vehicle imports, reported PTI. The agreement allows the import of 3.78 lakh conventional internal combustion engine passenger vehicles from the UK at concessional customs duty over the first 15 years of the pact. The quota covers premium as well as mass-market passenger vehicles. A Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) permits a fixed quantity of goods to be imported at a reduced customs duty. Once the quota is exhausted, imports attract the standard customs tariff. Who Can Apply for the Concessional Duty? The DGFT said only Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and dealers or channel partners authorised by UK vehicle manufacturers will be eligible to apply for TRQ allocations. Applicants will also be required to submit a pre-purchase agreement issued by the UK-based OEM, specifying the number of vehicles to be supplied during the relevant TRQ year. The quota year will follow the calendar year, running from January 1 to December 31. The DGFT said it will monitor the cumulative allocation of TRQ certificates and stop issuing fresh certificates once the prescribed quota for the year has been exhausted. Each certificate will remain valid for up to 12 months or until the end of the calendar year, whichever comes first. The notification also states that importers availing themselves of concessional duties under the TRQ mechanism should endeavour to pass on the benefit of lower customs duties to the final buyer or consumer. First-Year Import Limits Explained According to the notification, India will allow the import of 20,000 passenger cars across different engine categories during the first year of CETA. For petrol vehicles with engine capacities exceeding 3,000 cc and diesel vehicles above 2,500 cc, the first-year quota has been fixed at 10,000 units. Customs duty on these vehicles will fall to 30 per cent from the current 110 per cent. For petrol cars with engine capacities between 1,500 cc and 3,000 cc, and diesel vehicles up to 2,500 cc, the quota has been set at 5,000 units, with customs duty reduced to 50 per cent from 66 per cent. Another 5,000 units have been allocated for mass-market passenger cars with petrol engine capacities of up to 1,500 cc. Customs duty on these vehicles will also be reduced to 50 per cent from 66 per cent. The quota for conventional passenger cars is scheduled to rise gradually, peaking at 37,000 units in the fifth year. By then, customs duties for eligible imports will decline to 10 per cent, with no further reduction beyond that level. Electric Vehicles Remain Protected The agreement does not immediately open India's market to imported electric, hybrid or hydrogen-powered passenger vehicles. According to the CETA provisions, no duty concessions have been extended to these categories during the first five years of the agreement. From the sixth year onwards, electric, hybrid and hydrogen-powered passenger vehicles priced between GBP 40,000 and GBP 80,000 (Cost, Insurance and Freight) will attract a customs duty of 50 per cent under a quota of 400 units. Vehicles priced above GBP 80,000 will be eligible for a reduced customs duty of 40 per cent, with imports capped at 4,000 units. Taking serious note of the incident, the Railways placed Shri Girish Kumar, Chief Ticketing Inspector (CTI), Nanded, under suspension with immediate effect, citing an unauthorised entry into the coach and a major security lapse. Couple Had Booked Decorator Online The incident took place on July 6 aboard Train No. 11002 Balharshah–Mumbai Nandigram Express. According to the Railways, the passengers had independently hired Jalna-based Rahat Decorator through an online booking to decorate the coupe. Accordingly, a representative of the decorator boarded the First AC coach at Jalna and carried out the decoration inside the reserved coupe. Railway Calls Entry 'Unauthorised' The Railways said the decorator's entry into the First AC coach was unauthorised and amounted to a serious security lapse. The incident came to light after a video of the decorated coupe circulated widely on social media, prompting the Railways to initiate action. Departmental Inquiry Ordered Besides suspending the on-duty CTI, the Railways has ordered a detailed departmental inquiry into the matter. The inquiry will examine the circumstances that led to the security breach, determine how the decorator gained access to the coach without authorisation, fix responsibility and recommend further action against those found accountable. The Railways also said that further action against those responsible would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
