Lalit Modi Cleared In Landmark IPL South Africa Case After Tribunal Ruling

New Delhi: Former chairman Lalit Modi was cleared in the principal proceedings arising from the 2009 Indian Premier League's staging in South Africa after the Appellate Tribunal under SAFEMA set aside the penalties imposed on him, rejecting the Enforcement Directorate's core case that the foreign remittances were capital account transactions. Announcing the verdict after more than 16 years of investigations, proceedings, and litigation, Modi said the tribunal found that the main remittances related to IPL 2009 were current account transactions. It also determined that he was not responsible for the BCCI's statutory FEMA compliance or given the financial authority as alleged by the Enforcement Directorate. Calling it the end of the largest legal dispute stemming from the 2009 South Africa edition of the IPL, Modi said, "This marks the end of what has been the single most significant legal matter arising from the 2009 South Africa IPL." He added, "For over sixteen years, I have consistently maintained one simple position: I acted in good faith, in the best interests of Indian cricket and the IPL, and committed no personal wrongdoing." Modi explained that the decision to move the tournament to South Africa came under extraordinary circumstances when India's general elections made it impossible to host the event at home. "The successful staging of that season ensured that the IPL survived and ultimately became one of the world's most valuable sporting properties," he said. Emphasising his full cooperation with the legal process throughout the proceedings, Modi stated, "Throughout these proceedings, I have cooperated with the legal process and remained confident that the facts and the law would ultimately prevail." He expressed gratitude to "my legal team, my family, my friends and the many people who continued to believe in me during what has been an extraordinarily long journey." Describing the ruling as more than a personal win, Modi said, "This judgment is not simply personal vindication. It reaffirms the importance of due process, objective legal analysis, and the principle that allegations must ultimately be tested against evidence and law." He added, "I have always believed that time is the greatest judge. Today, after more than sixteen years, that process has spoken." Looking ahead, Modi mentioned that his focus had shifted beyond the case. "My focus remains firmly on the future. I will continue pursuing opportunities in global sport, business, and philanthropy while leaving this chapter behind with dignity and gratitude." Cyclospora Infection Is Spreading Rapidly; Know Why It Causes Severe Diarrhoea

A microscopic parasite called Cyclospora is causing growing concern in the United States as infections continue to rise. Health experts say the illness can trigger prolonged watery diarrhoea, dehydration and extreme weakness, with some patients requiring hospital care. In one widely reported case, an infected woman had to use the toilet nearly 30 times a day because of the severity of the infection. According to reports, the number of Cyclospora cases recorded in the US this year has exceeded the levels seen in 2019, prompting renewed attention from public health authorities. Why Cyclospora Infection Is Different From Ordinary Food Poisoning According to Dr. Cyriac A.B. Phillips, hepatologist, clinical scientist and public health researcher, Cyclospora infection is often mistaken for food poisoning or viral gastroenteritis. However, unlike common stomach infections that usually improve within a few days, Cyclospora can last for several weeks if left untreated. Doctors warn that patients may even experience a relapse after initially recovering. The infection is caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis, a microscopic protozoan parasite that multiplies inside the body and affects the lining of the small intestine, reducing the body's ability to absorb nutrients properly. As a result, patients may continue to experience weakness and weight loss even after diarrhoea begins to improve. ALSO READ | Not Every Fever Is Dengue: How To Identify The Difference During The Monsoon Season Symptoms And Treatment You Should Know The most common symptom is persistent watery diarrhoea that continues for more than two weeks. Other symptoms may include loss of appetite, abdominal cramps, bloating, excessive gas, fatigue and noticeable weight loss. Unlike some bacterial intestinal infections, Cyclospora usually does not cause bloody stools or pus, and vomiting is generally less common. Dr. Phillips notes that several commonly prescribed antibiotics, including metronidazole, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin, may not be effective against this parasite. Instead, patients often respond well to co-trimoxazole, which is considered the standard treatment. Diagnosis can also be challenging. Routine stool examinations may fail to detect the parasite, so specialised laboratory testing is often required when diarrhoea persists beyond two weeks. ALSO READ | Women Who Skip Breakfast Every Day May Face These 5 Side Effects, Says Doctor How The Infection Spreads And What Is India's Situation? Cyclospora was first identified in humans in 1979 and officially named in 1994. Research published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2023 suggested that multiple strains of the parasite are capable of infecting humans. The parasite spreads mainly through food or water contaminated with human waste. Raw vegetables, leafy greens, herbs, fruits and contaminated irrigation water are considered common sources of infection. Experts also point out that the parasite's protective outer layer makes it resistant to routine chlorine treatment. Although comprehensive nationwide data are limited in India, a 2025 study by the ICMR-National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), Kolkata, detected Cyclospora infection in around 2 percent of patients with diarrhoea in eastern India. During the monsoon months of July and August, the positivity rate reportedly increased to 7 percent, with children between 5 and 12 years among the most affected groups. Health experts recommend washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly, drinking safe water, maintaining good hand hygiene and seeking medical attention if watery diarrhoea continues for more than two weeks. ChatGPT Image Generation Stops Working Across The Globe, OpenAI Investigating Disruption

ChatGPT, the GPT-run AI chatbot service from OpenAI, has faced yet another outage. However, this time around, it is not the platform that has gone down, but instead a sizeable part of it. As per status.openai.com, the AI firm's own status dashboard, ChatGPT has been facing issues with its inbuilt image generation service over the past hour (at the time of writing).  As per the dashboard, OpenAI is 'investigating' the issue and it's safe to assume that the service will resume soon. OpenAI Probes Image Generation Glitch The latest disruption is limited to ChatGPT's image generation service rather than the entire platform. Users attempting to create AI-generated visuals have reported difficulties, while text-based conversations and other chatbot functions remain accessible. OpenAI's service status dashboard lists the issue as being under investigation. The company has not shared a timeline for when the feature will be fully restored. The image generation tool has become one of ChatGPT's defining features since its rollout, allowing users to create illustrations, artwork, graphics and edited images directly within a conversation without switching to a separate application. ALSO READ: ChatGPT Work Is More Than A Chatbot: 7 Features That You Can Utilise To Get Some Real Work Done Billions Of Images Created Every Week The popularity of ChatGPT's image creation feature has grown rapidly since its introduction. OpenAI has previously revealed that more than 130 million users generated over 700 million images during the first week after the feature launched. That momentum has continued, with the platform now producing more than 1.5 billion AI-generated images every week. The feature is integrated directly into the ChatGPT interface and is powered by OpenAI's DALL-E technology. Because users can seamlessly move between text prompts, coding tasks and image generation within the same chat, image creation has become a regular part of the experience for a significant portion of ChatGPT's estimated 500 million users. India has emerged as the largest market globally for ChatGPT's image generation feature, contributing a substantial share of the platform's overall image creation activity. The widespread adoption has helped drive engagement across different categories of users. ALSO READ: OpenAI Data Shows India Among Top Countries Using ChatGPT For World Cup How ChatGPT Creates AI Images ChatGPT's image generation relies on advanced multimodal artificial intelligence models capable of interpreting natural language instructions and converting them into visual content. The process begins when a user enters a text prompt describing the desired image. The AI analyses the request, identifying important details such as the subject, background, lighting and artistic style. It can also interpret uploaded reference images or mood boards to better match colours, composition and design preferences. The system then converts the text into mathematical representations known as embeddings. Using an attention mechanism, it determines which elements of the prompt are most important before beginning the image creation process. Instead of assembling pieces from existing photographs, the AI generates an entirely new image through a diffusion process. It starts with what resembles random visual noise and gradually removes that noise in multiple stages, refining shapes, textures and colours until a coherent image emerges. Modern versions of the technology also support accurate text rendering within generated images, enabling the AI to produce readable words on signs, packaging and logos. Before the image is delivered, the system performs final refinements, including sharpening details, adjusting contrast and optimising resolution. Users can then continue editing the image simply by describing the changes they want in the chat.

Doc Talk | Struggling To Understand Conversations In Noisy Places? It May Signal A Brain Condition

You can hear people talking, but in a crowded restaurant or during a family gathering, the words seem to blur together. Many people assume this is simply a part of growing older. While age-related hearing loss is common, difficulty understanding conversations particularly when it affects one ear, may sometimes be the first sign of a neurological condition called vestibular schwannoma.  ALSO READ: Doc Talk | Waking Up With Swollen Hands Or Feet? Orthopaedic Specialist Explains What It Could Mean When Hearing Isn't The Real Problem Vestibular schwannoma, also known as an acoustic neuroma, is a benign tumour that develops on the vestibular branch of the eighth cranial nerve, which carries hearing and balance signals from the inner ear to the brain. Although non-cancerous and typically slow growing, it can significantly affect hearing, balance and quality of life if left undiagnosed. Symptoms And Risk Factors To Watch Out For Unlike age-related hearing loss, which usually affects both ears gradually and symmetrically, vestibular schwannoma most often causes progressive hearing loss in one ear. A distinctive feature is that patients may still hear sounds reasonably well but struggle to understand spoken words, especially in noisy environments. Many patients describe it as, "I can hear people speaking, but I can't make out what they are saying." This happens because the tumour compresses the hearing nerve, disrupting the clarity of sound signals reaching the brain rather than the ear's ability to detect sound. Other symptoms may include persistent ringing in one ear (tinnitus), imbalance or dizziness and, in larger tumours, facial numbness or weakness. Since these tumours usually grow slowly, symptoms often develop over months or even years, making them easy to dismiss as normal ageing or routine hearing loss. Vestibular schwannoma is most commonly diagnosed in adults around the age of 55, with the incidence increasing in later decades of life. However, it is not exclusively a condition of older adults and can also occur in younger individuals. In some cases, it is associated with a rare inherited condition called Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2), a congenital genetic disorder in which vestibular schwannomas may develop at a younger age and often affect both hearing nerves (bilateral tumours). While it is relatively uncommon, greater awareness and improved access to MRI imaging have enabled earlier diagnosis in many patients. An important clinical clue is when a hearing test shows only mild hearing loss, but the person's ability to understand speech is disproportionately poor. In such cases, specialists may recommend detailed hearing assessments along with an MRI scan to determine whether the hearing nerve is being affected. ALSO READ: Doc Talk | Feeling Weak After A Viral Infection? Here's How To Recover Faster This Monsoon Treatment And Outlook Once diagnosed through an MRI scan, vestibular schwannoma can be effectively managed with several treatment options, depending on the size of the tumour, symptoms and overall health of the patient. Smaller tumours, typically measuring less than 2 cm, can be treated with microsurgery or radiation treatment (Gamma Knife radiosurgery, which is available at P. D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC). Tumours measuring between 2.5 and 4 cm usually require microsurgical removal with intraoperative monitoring of the facial nerve to prevent facial weakness in the postoperative period. It is important to know that this is a benign tumour and, once managed properly, there is a permanent cure for this condition. This World Brain Day, let us remember that not every hearing problem begins in the ear. Persistent hearing difficulty in one ear, ringing in the ear or increasing difficulty following conversations in noisy surroundings should never be ignored. Seeking timely medical evaluation can lead to earlier diagnosis, better treatment options and, in many cases, help preserve hearing, protect neurological function and improve long-term quality of life. Manager Promised ₹35 LPA Job, But Graduate Left With ₹6 LPA Offer After Internship; Reddit Post Goes Viral

A heartfelt Reddit post by a 2026 engineering graduate has struck a chord with thousands of students and job seekers after the user shared how an expected ₹35 lakh per annum (LPA) pre-placement offer (PPO) disappeared just two days before the end of a six-month internship.  The graduate claimed they had received positive feedback throughout the internship and had been repeatedly assured by their manager that a full-time offer was almost guaranteed. However, the expected opportunity never arrived, leaving the student with only a backup offer of around ₹6 LPA.  The post has since gone viral, with many users discussing the uncertainty of campus placements, the slowdown in fresher hiring and the importance of having a backup plan.  'I Was Told I Would 100% Get the PPO'  The engineering graduate said they secured a six-month internship through campus placements with the expectation of a ₹35 LPA Pre-Placement Offer (PPO). Throughout the internship, the manager reportedly assured the student that the PPO was almost certain.  The graduate wrote, "I gave my everything, tried my best during the internship and had a really positive manager feedback(I was basically told by my manager that I would 100% get the ppo and not to worry)."  However, just two days before the internship ended, all 90 interns were informed that no PPOs would be offered.   Only a ₹6.5 LPA Offer Left  After missing out on the PPO, the graduate said the only remaining option was a ₹6.5 LPA campus placement offer.  The student wrote, "Now the only option I have is a 6.5 lpa offer from accenture that I got as a backup from campus placement."  The graduate also shared that despite having a strong profile, they were not receiving interview calls, writing, "I am not getting any interviews at all, not even seeing any job postings for freshers."  Internet Advises Graduate to Take the Job and Keep Looking  The Reddit post quickly attracted widespread attention, with many users encouraging the graduate to accept the existing job offer instead of remaining unemployed.  Several commenters suggested that gaining industry experience would make it easier to switch to a better-paying role later. Others reminded students not to depend solely on verbal assurances during internships, saying that a job should only be considered confirmed after receiving an official offer letter.  The discussion has reignited conversations about the unpredictability of campus placements, changing hiring trends in the technology sector and the challenges many fresh engineering graduates are facing while entering the job market.

Not Every Fever Is Dengue: How To Identify The Difference During The Monsoon Season

The arrival of the monsoon brings much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat, but it also marks the beginning of the season for viral infections and mosquito-borne diseases. As the rains set in, cases of fever become increasingly common in many households. While most fevers during this time are caused by seasonal viral infections and recover with rest and medication, not every fever should be taken lightly. In some cases, it may be an early sign of illnesses such as dengue or malaria. Knowing the difference between a common viral fever and dengue can help you seek timely treatment and avoid complications. How To Identify A Normal Seasonal Fever A seasonal viral fever usually develops with mild to moderate symptoms and often improves within two to three days with proper care. Common symptoms include: Mild to moderate fever Body aches and fatigue Sore throat Mild cough Loss of appetite Doctors advise getting enough rest, drinking plenty of fluids, eating light and nutritious food, and avoiding outside food during recovery. Staying dry and avoiding getting drenched in the rain can also help reduce the risk of infections. In most cases, symptoms gradually improve without causing serious complications. Women Who Skip Breakfast Every Day May Face These 5 Side Effects, Says Doctor

Breakfast is often called the most important meal of the day, yet it is also the one most commonly skipped. Whether it's because of a hectic morning schedule or an attempt to lose weight, many women leave home without eating anything. While skipping breakfast occasionally may not be a problem, making it a daily habit can gradually affect your health. According to health experts, regularly missing breakfast may impact blood sugar levels, metabolism, hormonal balance, and overall nutrition. Here's why doctors say women should think twice before skipping their first meal of the day. Skipping Breakfast Can Affect Blood Sugar And Hormonal Health Experts say breakfast plays an important role in keeping blood sugar levels stable. Going for long hours without eating can cause blood sugar to fluctuate, leaving you feeling tired, irritable, and craving sugary or processed foods later in the day. Over time, this habit may contribute to weight gain and increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Doctors also point out that women dealing with conditions such as PCOS, thyroid disorders, or irregular periods should be especially careful. Eating meals at regular intervals helps support hormonal balance, while frequently skipping breakfast may put additional stress on the body and worsen existing hormonal issues. ALSO READ | ABP LIVE Doc Talk | Wearing Contact Lenses This Monsoon? Avoid These Eye Care Mistakes Missing Breakfast May Lead To Nutrient Deficiencies And Overeating Breakfast is an opportunity to provide your body with essential nutrients after an overnight fast. A balanced morning meal can supply protein, fibre, calcium, iron, and important vitamins needed to start the day. If breakfast is skipped regularly and the rest of the day's diet is not well balanced, nutritional deficiencies can develop over time. Experts also explain that skipping breakfast may affect the hormones that regulate hunger and fullness. As a result, many people feel excessively hungry later in the day, making it easier to overeat or reach for unhealthy snacks, which can make weight management more difficult. ALSO READ | How Sana Saeed's Experience With Bulimia Sheds Light On A Silent Mental Health Condition There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Approach Doctors emphasise that there isn't a single eating pattern that works for everyone. Some women follow intermittent fasting and remain perfectly healthy because they meet their nutritional needs during their eating window. The key is not simply whether you eat breakfast, but whether your body receives enough protein, healthy fats, fibre, vitamins, and minerals throughout the day. If you regularly skip breakfast, make sure the rest of your meals are balanced and discuss your dietary pattern with a healthcare professional if you have any underlying health conditions. Omicron RF.5 Variant Detected In Four COVID-19 Patients In Andhra Pradesh: Know Symptoms, Risks

A fresh COVID-19 update has come from Andhra Pradesh, where the Omicron RF.5 variant has been detected in four people from Kadapa district. The patients had tested positive for COVID-19, following which their samples were sent to a virology laboratory in Pune for genome sequencing. The report has now confirmed that all four samples belong to the RF.5 sublineage of the Omicron variant. State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav shared the information through an official statement and also reviewed the situation with health officials. While the news has raised concerns, experts say there is no evidence at present to suggest that this variant is more dangerous than earlier Omicron strains. What Is The Omicron RF.5 Variant? RF.5 is one of the many sub-variants that have evolved from the Omicron strain of the coronavirus. According to Vishnuvardhan, Director of Medical Education, the variant is part of the virus's natural evolution. He explained that the lineage developed from the JN.1 variant, then moved through LF.7 and PY.1.1.1, before eventually becoming RF.5. He also clarified that RF.5 is not a combination of two different variants. It was identified during routine genome sequencing carried out to monitor how the virus is changing over time.
