Doc Talk | Forgetting Words While Speaking? A Neurosurgeon Explains The Reason Behind It

Forgetting a word in the middle of a conversation is normal but it feels frustrating or embarrassing even though such word-finding lapses happen to most people. At that point, the person is clear about what they wish to say, but the mind searches; the word does not come. In many cases, they reflect normal brain function rather than a warning sign. ALSO READ: Doc Talk | Skin Disorders In India Are On The Rise; Here's Why Experts Recommend A Holistic Approach Need To Know About The 'Tip-Of-The-Tongue' The "tip-of-the-tongue" phenomenon is one of the most common causes of word forgetfulness. In this case, the brain already knows the word's meaning, but it momentarily has trouble recalling its name or sound. Without any effort, the word usually reappears minutes or even seconds later. This is thought to be a common feature of memory recall and gets a little more common as people age, experience stress, or get tired. When is it normalEveryday a large amount of information is processed by the human brain. Stress, fatigue and a lack of sleep, as well as multitasking and distraction, can all affect retrieval speed and make it difficult to get at words.  Age can also play a role. As people get older, it’s common for word retrieval to take a little longer. Importantly, knowledge and understanding often remain strong, even if it sometimes takes an extra moment to find the exact word. Usually, it returns on its own shortly after. Difference Between Normal Forgetfulness vs Dementia The memory issues associated with dementia are significantly different from the occasional trouble recalling a word. A person with normal age-related amnesia often retains their independence and recollects the information later. A person suffering from dementia, on the other hand, could struggle with daily duties, forget previously learned information, get confused in familiar settings, or be unable to identify ordinary items or persons. Isolated instances of word forgetfulness are not as significant as the pattern and course of symptoms. Signs That Need Attention It’s worth paying closer attention if word-finding problems become frequent or worsen over time. Warning signs include: Struggling to find words often Swapping in words that don’t make sense Having trouble following conversations Forgetting familiar names or objects repeatedly Issues with memory, judgment, or daily routines Noticeable changes in personality or behaviour Medical checkup is required if these issues interfere with daily life because they may point to a neurological condition. ALSO READ: Doc Talk | Teenage Bone Pain Or Growing Pains? Oncologist Explains Why Osteosarcoma Goes Unnoticed Possible Causes There are multiple causes such as strokes, brain injuries and other disorders such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, brain infections and other neurological disorders that might affect memory and language of a person. For example, after a stroke or brain injury, aphasia can affect one’s ability to speak, understand, read and write.  Vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, depression and medication side effects can also contribute. How Is It Diagnosed? Doctors begin with a detailed history of the patient and a neurological exam in order to check functions like memory, language, attention and problem-solving. They order blood tests to rule out vitamin deficiencies or hormonal issues. If they suspect a stroke, tumor, or other problem in the brain, they may need imaging tests like an MRI or CT. Treatment And Management Treatment will depend on the cause that underlies it. For the age-related common lapses, better sleep, reduced stress, staying mentally active and overall health management can be of help. For aphasia post-stroke, speech and language therapy can help. If it’s something like aphasia after a stroke, speech and language therapy can make a real difference. When there’s a physical problem like a tumor, surgery might be the right move to treat the source and ease symptoms. Sometimes losing a word during a conversation is a common aspect of the brain's language retrieval process, which can often be affected by stress, exhaustion, or aging. However, word-finding issues shouldn't be disregarded if they start to occur regularly, get worse over time, or coincide with behavioral, speech, or memory difficulties. Early medical assessment can assist in determining the underlying reason, and prompt treatment can frequently stop further deterioration and enhance long-term results. ICMR Targets Junk Food In New Strategy To Combat Rising Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is emerging as a major public health concern in India. According to the World Obesity Atlas 2026, nearly 41 million children across the country are already overweight or obese. If current trends continue, India could account for more than 11 per cent of the world's childhood obesity cases by 2030. To address this growing challenge, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), through its National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), has introduced a comprehensive policy roadmap aimed at creating healthier food environments for children and adolescents. The recommendations are part of a policy document titled Priority Policy Actions to Promote Healthier Diets and Food Environments for Children and Adolescents in India, prepared under the 'Let's Fix Our Food' consortium. The report, launched by NITI Aayog Member Dr M. Srinivas, is based on nearly three years of research, state-level assessments and consultations with experts. It aims to reduce obesity as well as diet-related diseases such as diabetes and hypertension among young people. ICMR Calls For Stricter Rules On Junk Food Marketing One of the report's key recommendations is stronger regulation of unhealthy food marketing aimed at children. ICMR has called for legally enforceable restrictions on the advertising of foods high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS), replacing the existing voluntary approach. The report also recommends banning misleading health claims made by junk food brands across television, digital platforms and other forms of media. According to researchers, the widespread availability of unhealthy foods, aggressive advertising and poor awareness about nutrition are among the leading contributors to rising obesity rates. Another major recommendation is the introduction of simple front-of-pack nutrition labels on packaged foods. Clear labelling would allow parents and children to identify products high in sugar, salt or unhealthy fats before making a purchase. The roadmap also encourages nutrition education through digital learning modules, interactive platforms and comic books to help children make informed food choices. ALSO READ | Rare Cancer Spreading In Fish Raises Concern Among Scientists Stronger Focus On Healthier School Food Environments Schools are another major focus of the roadmap. ICMR has recommended stricter regulation of school canteens and food vendors located near educational institutions to reduce children's easy access to junk food. At the same time, it has called for greater availability of affordable fruits and nutritious meal options within school premises. Although the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) already prohibits the sale and advertisement of foods high in saturated fat, trans fat, added sugar and sodium within 50 metres of schools, the report says enforcement remains weak. It recommends regular inspections, stronger monitoring and better compliance. A pilot assessment conducted in private schools in Uttar Pradesh found that ultra-processed snacks and sugary beverages were still widely available in school canteens, while nutrition services remained limited. To improve oversight, researchers have also developed a Nutrition Environment Assessment Toolkit for Schools, enabling institutions to evaluate and improve their food environment. ALSO READ | Influencer Living With PCOS Shares How She Lost 15 Kg Without Portion Control Health Tax Proposed To Discourage Unhealthy Eating The roadmap also proposes introducing a health tax on foods high in fat, salt and sugar, as well as sugar-sweetened beverages, to discourage excessive consumption. At the same time, it recommends policies that make healthier foods more affordable and accessible for families. According to the report, unhealthy diets contribute to nearly 56.4 per cent of India's overall disease burden. Experts believe that encouraging healthy eating habits from an early age will play a crucial role in reducing obesity and preventing lifestyle diseases later in life.

Quote of the day by Benjamin Franklin: "Many people die at twenty-five and aren't buried until…" - why a life without curiosity is only half-lived

A popular quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin highlights the idea of ceasing personal growth early. This saying, though not originally Franklin's, emphasizes living fully beyond physical existence. Continuous learning and curiosity are essential for a richer life at any age. Routine can become detrimental when it replaces exploration and new experiences. Embracing change and purpose drives meaningful progress throughout one's life.

Gold Silver Rate Today (July 28): Metals Fall, Check Latest Rates In Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, More

Gold Silver Rate Today: Gold and silver prices declined on Tuesday as investors turned cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy announcement, while a stronger US dollar also weighed on sentiment in the precious metals market. On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures for August delivery fell by Rs 1,213, or 0.85 per cent, to Rs 1,41,850 per 10 grams. The contract witnessed a business turnover of 759 lots during the session. Market participants said traders largely stayed on the sidelines ahead of the US Fed's policy decision due on July 29, resulting in subdued buying interest. The stronger dollar further added pressure on bullion prices. According to Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, the appreciation in the US dollar, coupled with investor caution ahead of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision, weighed on gold prices. In the international market, COMEX gold futures were trading 0.85 per cent lower at $4,041.42 per ounce. Silver prices also remained under pressure on Tuesday, tracking the weakness across the broader precious metals market. Although the PTI market update focused on gold futures, silver sentiment was similarly affected by expectations surrounding the Fed's policy outlook and the stronger dollar. Higher interest rates typically reduce the appeal of non-yielding assets such as gold and silver by increasing the opportunity cost of holding them. Investors are therefore closely watching the Fed's commentary for cues on the future interest rate trajectory. Analysts believe geopolitical developments continue to provide some support to bullion, preventing a steeper decline. Pinky Yadav, Commodity Fundamental Analyst at Choice Broking, said losses in gold were capped after US President Donald Trump indicated that Washington was engaged in constructive discussions with Iran, raising hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough and pushing crude oil prices lower. She added that the broader outlook for gold remains supported by resilient demand from China, where higher imports, sustained investor buying and continued inflows into bullion-backed exchange-traded funds point to healthy physical and investment demand. Despite Tuesday's decline, analysts said precious metals could remain volatile in the near term as markets react to the outcome of the US Federal Reserve's policy meeting and any signals on the future path of interest rates. South Korea's Kospi plunged more than 8 per cent, weighed down by a sharp sell-off in SK Hynix, whose shares fell around 10 per cent. Japan's Nikkei 225 also came under heavy selling pressure, declining 3.84 per cent, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.23 per cent. Wall Street Ends Mixed US markets ended on a mixed note overnight. Oil Extends Decline on US-Iran Diplomacy Hopes Crude oil prices continued to weaken as optimism grew over a possible diplomatic breakthrough between the United States and Iran. ALSO READ: Elon Musk's Net Worth Slides Below $700 Billion; SpaceX Stock Down Nearly 50% Since June US President Donald Trump said talks with Tehran were progressing well, although he warned that military action remained an option if negotiations failed. Iranian officials also struck a relatively positive tone on the discussions. The July Brent crude futures contract traded at $87.52 per barrel, down 0.95 per cent in early trade. Lower crude oil prices are generally considered favourable for India as they help ease inflationary pressures and reduce import costs. Gold, Silver Trade Lower Precious metals also remained under pressure. Gold futures fell 0.67 per cent, while silver futures declined 1.79 per cent in early trade as investors shifted their attention to upcoming macroeconomic data and corporate earnings. Technical View According to Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Securities, Monday's rally reflected broad-based buying across sectors, with tourism, media, realty and information technology stocks emerging as the strongest performers. He said the market formed a bullish daily candlestick pattern after maintaining upward momentum throughout Monday's session, indicating that near-term sentiment has improved. Chouhan believes the ongoing recovery could continue as long as the Nifty holds above the 23,800 level (or around 76,300 on the Sensex). On the upside, he expects the index to test its 20-day simple moving average in the 24,100-24,150 zone. However, a break below the key support could trigger fresh selling pressure, pulling the Nifty towards the 23,700-23,600 range. He also advised investors to use any further recovery to trim weaker long positions near the resistance zone, while considering selective fresh buying on declines closer to support levels where the risk-reward equation appears more favourable.
