When 'Normal' Isn't Normal: Early Gynaecological Warning Signs Women Should Never Ignore

(Dr Bani Kumar Mitra) A woman’s body communicates constantly, often through subtle signs that are easy to overlook or normalise. In my years as a gynaecologist, I have seen countless cases where early symptoms were dismissed as “normal” or “temporary” only to evolve into more complex health concerns later. Understanding and responding to these early gynaecological signals is one of the most powerful steps a woman can take towards protecting her long-term reproductive health. ALSO READ: From Monsoon Illness To Year-Round Threat: Understanding Dengue’s Growing Impact In India Listening To The Body’s Early Warnings Many women grow up believing that discomfort is an inevitable part of womanhood. Irregular periods, pelvic pain, excessive fatigue or unusual discharge are often ignored or managed with home remedies. However, these are not random occurrences. They are the body’s way of signalling imbalance, infection or hormonal disruption. When such symptoms persist or recur, they deserve medical attention rather than silent endurance. Menstrual Irregularities That Should Not Be Ignored Changes in the menstrual cycle are among the earliest indicators of underlying gynaecological issues. Very heavy bleeding, prolonged cycles, frequent spotting or sudden changes in cycle length may point towards hormonal disorders, fibroids, thyroid issues or conditions such as PCOS. Painful periods that interfere with daily life are also not “normal” and may indicate endometriosis or pelvic inflammation. Early diagnosis in such cases can significantly improve quality of life and future fertility outcomes. Pelvic Pain And Discomfort Pelvic pain, whether sharp, dull or recurring, is often brushed aside due to busy routines or fear of diagnosis. Yet persistent lower abdominal pain can be associated with ovarian cysts, infections or uterine conditions. Pain during intercourse is another symptom women hesitate to discuss, but it can indicate vaginal infections, hormonal changes or deeper gynaecological concerns that require timely care. Vaginal Changes And Infections Alterations in vaginal discharge, unusual odour, itching or burning sensations are common indicators of infections. While many of these conditions are easily treatable in their early stages, delaying care can lead to recurrent infections, pelvic inflammatory disease or fertility complications. Maintaining vaginal health is not merely about hygiene; it is about recognising changes and seeking professional guidance when something feels different. Fatigue, Hormones And Overall Well-Being Unexplained fatigue, mood changes or sudden weight fluctuations are often attributed to stress or lifestyle. However, these symptoms can be closely linked to hormonal imbalances, anaemia or thyroid disorders. Since hormones influence nearly every system in the body, early intervention helps restore balance before the condition begins to affect reproductive health more seriously. Why Early Action Matters Timely consultation allows for simpler treatment options, faster recovery and better long-term outcomes. Ignoring early signs often leads to advanced conditions that require more invasive procedures and prolonged treatment. Preventive gynaecology is not about fear; it is about awareness, empowerment and proactive care. Encouraging Open Conversations About Women’s Health One of the biggest barriers to early diagnosis is hesitation. Cultural conditioning often discourages women from discussing intimate health concerns openly. Creating awareness and normalising these conversations within families and communities can significantly change how women approach their health. From Monsoon Illness To Year-Round Threat: Understanding Dengue’s Growing Impact In India

(Dr. Ritabrata Kundu) Dengue, once considered a monsoon disease, now is observed in winters too. From the first large epidemic recorded in India in 1963, the face of dengue incidences has radically transformed. What used to be an occasional outbreak has become a recurring public health challenge. Since the mid-90s, dengue epidemics have become more frequent and progressively larger in scale. The geographical spread of the disease has also expanded as these outbreaks usually begin in cities, where population density is high, and then quickly spread to nearby towns and regions. ALSO READ: Chicken Soup Vs Tomato Soup: Which One Is Healthier For Your Body? Know Here Dengue: A Year-Round Disease Over time, the pattern of dengue occurrence itself has also changed. Earlier regarded as a disease confined largely to the monsoon season, dengue has, over the past few decades, continued to circulate even between outbreaks. This sustained transmission has turned dengue into a regular presence rather than a seasonal event in many parts of the country. As a result, India has now become endemic for dengue, including its more severe forms. In several large and densely populated cities, the situation has progressed further to hyperendemicity, meaning that multiple types of the virus circulate continuously, increasing the risk of repeated infections and more serious illness. A major reason for this persistence lies in changing environment we live in. Rising temperatures, higher humidity, irregular rainfall patterns and rapid urbanisation have created ideal conditions for dengue-carrying mosquitoes to survive and breed throughout the year. Everyday realities such as water storage practices, construction activity, clogged drains and waste accumulation provide abundant breeding sites close to homes, schools and workplaces. Why Children Are Vulnerable The shift in dengue disease pattern has serious consequences, especially for children whose immunity is still in the developing stage. Dengue can rapidly escalate and lead to severe, life-threatening complications requiring hospitalization. Children can get infected multiple times through different strains. Since there is no specific cure for dengue, prevention remains the most effective and reliable strategy to protect children. Prevention And Community Action Is The Key Despite its growing impact, dengue remains a preventable disease. Currently in India, many states continue to rely heavily on outdoor insecticide fogging as a key dengue control measure. While fogging is visible and often reassuring, its impact is limited because the dengue mosquito prefers to rest indoors, in dark and hidden spaces. In some areas, households may refuse entry to spray teams for indoor spraying or close doors and windows during outdoor fogging, further reducing its impact. Delays in reporting cases or incomplete surveillance also mean that spraying often happens too late to prevent outbreaks, allowing mosquito populations to return quickly. Preventing mosquito breeding presents another challenge. Dengue mosquito eggs can remain dormant for over a year in dry conditions and hatch as soon as they come into contact with water. This makes one-time control efforts ineffective unless breeding sites are identified and eliminated regularly. This is why dengue control cannot rest solely with authorities. Controlling dengue is everyone’s responsibility. Individuals and families play a crucial role by regularly checking and eliminating mosquito breeding sites in and around their homes. Covering stored water, clearing stagnant water, keeping surroundings clean and using personal protective measures against mosquitoes can significantly reduce risk. Dengue prevention in India requires an integrated approach that combines personal protection, strong community-based mosquito control, responsive public health systems and sustained government action. Protecting children from dengue demands shared accountability and enduring collaboration between the state and society. Only through such coordinated efforts can India achieve long-term dengue control and secure a healthier future for its children. ‘She Gave My Mom A Nasty Look’: Influencer Recounts ‘Unpleasant’ Encounter With Kiara Advani On Jaipur-Mumbai Flight

Influencer Kartikey Tiwari recalled an encounter with actors Kiara Advani and Kartik Aaryan that, he said, stayed with him for all the wrong reasons. He claimed the incident took place while he was travelling from Jaipur to Mumbai in business class with his mother and brother. According to Tiwari, the situation began with a brief seating mix-up. He added that although Kiara Advani did not say anything, she gave a “nasty look” that stayed with him and led him to reflect on celebrity behaviour and the culture of celebrity worship in India. ‘Kiara Advani Gave My Mom A Nasty Look,’ Claims Influencer In a video shared on Instagram, Tiwari narrated the full incident. He explained that the actors were on the same flight as they were returning after promotions for their film Satyaprem Ki Katha. “We were travelling from Jaipur to Mumbai. Their film had just released, so they were heading back after promotional activities. I was in business class with my mother and brother,” he said, adding that the encounter changed his perception of how celebrities appear on screen compared to how they behave in real life. Tiwari further shared that the situation began when his mother accidentally sat in the wrong seat due to confusion between the rows. “Then Kiara Advani came. Of course, if someone is sitting in your seat, you can simply say ‘this is my seat’. That’s completely normal. And anyway, we were all sitting in business class,” he said. He claimed that what bothered him was not the seat mix-up, but Kiara Advani’s reaction. “But the way she looked at us was extremely unpleasant. She gave a nasty look, as if her seat had been ruined just because a non-celebrity had sat there. She didn’t say anything, just made that face,” he alleged. He added that once the air hostess directed his mother to the correct seat, she immediately complied. ‘If It Had Been Deepika Or Alia…’ Tiwari said the moment stayed with him. “Kiara Advani’s expression really stayed with me. You’re not even that big of an actress. If it had been Deepika or Alia, I might have understood, but you? That expression stuck in my mind. My mother had just mistakenly sat in the wrong seat,” he said. He went on to criticise celebrity worship culture, saying, “That’s why I never understand why people idolise celebrities so much. People behave as if actors know them or care about them. But in reality, for them, no one else exists. They simply don’t care.” Tiwari also spoke about Kartik Aaryan’s behaviour during the flight, describing it as unusual. He claimed that the actor barely interacted with the cabin crew and spent most of the journey speaking only with Kiara Advani. “They were speaking in English continuously, as if saying even a single word in Hindi would be some kind of mistake,” he added.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Kartikey Tiwari (@kartikeyt0307) How Did Social Media Users React To This? People flooded the comments section of his post with their thoughts. “Not every celebrity, but Kiara is actually rude,” claimed one Instagram user.  Another added, “Read another Reddit story about Kiara. Someone encountered her at a restaurant in a foreign country where she dropped her lip balm or something similar. When the person tried to return it, she gave them a strange look and refused to take it back. Later, she asked one of her security personnel to get it for her.” “Expected wayyyy better from you,” wrote a third while tagging the actor.  A fourth suggested, “Start cancel culture.”

Skoda Kylaq Classic Plus: Is This India’s Most Affordable Automatic SUV?

Skoda has increased the variant list of the Kylaq do six and improved the value for money quotient for the compact SUV. The Kylaq remains the best selling Skoda and now there is a new variant. The Classic+ is a new variant above the Classic which is the base model. The Classic+ meanwhile comes with an automatic variant as the Classic has a manual only option. Automatic Option and Added Features That makes it one of the most affordable automatic gearbox equipped SUVs while here it is a 6 speed torque converter gearbox not an AMT. The new Classic+ variant also gets more features and is better value than the Classic. The extra features over the base variant includes 16 inch alloy wheels, automatic wipers, auto dimming IRVM, cruise control, sunroof and steering mounted audio controls. Pricing and Value Proposition Prices for the Kylaq Classic+ starts at Rs 66,000 more than the base Classic. The automatic version meanwhile costs Rs 9.25 lakh which makes it much cheaper than the next automatic gearbox equipped Kylaq. This means the Kylaq with a proper torque converter gearbox is now costing Rs 9.25 lakh. The Kylaq comes with a standard 1.0 TSI turbo petrol and has either a manual gearbox or an automatic. This new variant makes it much more attainable than the earlier automatic variants. Compared to the base trim, it seems to be better value too. While the Kylaq overall does miss out on some features like a 360 degree camera or ADAS, these new variants makes this a much more value for money SUV especially with a torque converter automatic.

Golden Temple Row: Netizens Flag Hindu Woman Beaten Earlier, Muslim Man Let Off-‘Different Rules?’

A controversy has been simmering for days after a viral video from Amritsar’s Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) showed a Muslim man using water from the holy sarovar in a manner that many social media users claimed resembled wazu (Islamic ablution). The clip triggered strong online outrage and also drew offline reactions, with several Sikh voices questioning whether rules are being enforced uniformly at the shrine. The debate intensified further after reports said the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) questioned the man and later let him go following an apology. Viral Clip Triggers Outrage The widely circulated video showed the man using sarovar water for cleansing, which many users termed a breach of maryada (religious code of conduct). A large number of those criticising the act online stressed that the sarovar is sacred and must not be used for any form of personal cleansing ritual. The episode also triggered a wider conversation on crowd behaviour at religious sites, with users flagging the growing “reel culture” and urging authorities to strengthen monitoring and signage to avoid repeated violations of conduct. Reports said the man later issued an apology, stating he was unaware of the shrine’s code and did not intend disrespect. SGPC officials reportedly accepted the apology and released him, reiterating that visitors must adhere to norms and that the sarovar should not be used for cleansing activities. ‘One Rule For All’ Question The row has also revived comparisons with earlier incidents at the Golden Temple complex, including a case from previous years where a woman was allegedly thrashed by sewadars for smoking a beedi on the premises. Sikhs consider tobacco consumption a taboo, and the prohibition against smoking has historically been enforced strictly within gurdwara spaces. Several users alleged inconsistency in handling of rule violations, asking why physical force was used in one case while an apology was considered sufficient in another. Critics argued that enforcement should be uniform and should not appear selective or faith-specific. The SGPC’s response has, in turn, expanded the debate beyond the viral clip, raising questions around maryada enforcement, the role of sewadars, and whether clearer protocols are needed to prevent both misconduct and vigilantism.

7 Subtle Signs Your Body Needs More Vitamin D Right Now

Vitamin D is often called the "sunshine vitamin", yet it remains one of the most commonly overlooked nutrients worldwide. Despite living in an era of health awareness, many people unknowingly live with low Vitamin D levels because the symptoms are subtle, gradual, and easy to dismiss. Unlike sudden illnesses, Vitamin D deficiency quietly affects energy levels, mood, immunity, bones and even long-term health. What makes it more concerning is that these signs like, tiredness, low motivation, frequent colds or unexplained aches, often seen normal. Recognising these early warnings can help prevent bigger health issues later. Here are seven subtle but important signs that your body may be asking for more Vitamin D right now. ALSO READ: 6 Easy Sweet Potato Recipes To Try This Winter 1. Constant Fatigue Even After Adequate Rest Feeling tired despite sleeping well is one of the earliest and most common signs of low Vitamin D. This fatigue isn’t the dramatic exhaustion that forces you to rest; instead, it’s a persistent heaviness that makes everyday tasks feel effortful. You may wake up feeling unrefreshed or experience an energy dip that lingers throughout the day. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in cellular energy production. When levels are low, muscles and tissues struggle to function efficiently, leading to a sense of physical and mental sluggishness. Many people assume this tiredness is due to stress, workload or ageing, overlooking the nutritional link. 2. Frequent Colds Or Reduced Immunity If you find yourself catching colds more often than usual or taking longer to recover, low Vitamin D could be a contributing factor. Vitamin D is essential for immune regulation, helping the body activate defensive cells that fight infections effectively. Without adequate levels, the immune system becomes slower and less responsive, leaving you more vulnerable to seasonal illnesses. This doesn’t always appear dramatic; it may simply feel like recurring sore throats, mild fevers or lingering coughs. Over time, weakened immunity can disrupt routines and reduce overall vitality. 3. Low Mood, Irritability Or Lack Of Motivation Vitamin D has a direct connection to brain health and emotional regulation. Subtle mood changes, such as unexplained irritability, low motivation or feeling emotionally flat, can sometimes be linked to deficiency. These feelings often creep in gradually, making them easy to ignore or blame on external pressures. Vitamin D receptors are present in areas of the brain responsible for mood balance. When levels drop, emotional stability can be affected, potentially contributing to prolonged low mood or seasonal emotional changes. While not a replacement for mental health care, maintaining healthy Vitamin D levels supports emotional resilience and mental clarity. 4. Bone Discomfort Or Unexplained Body Aches Occasional aches are common, but persistent bone discomfort or deep muscle pain without clear cause may signal low Vitamin D. This vitamin is vital for calcium absorption, which directly affects bone strength and structural integrity. When Vitamin D is insufficient, bones may become weaker over time, leading to dull aches, stiffness or discomfort, especially in the lower back, hips or legs. These sensations are often mistaken for posture issues or normal ageing. 5. Slow Healing Of Cuts And Bruises If minor wounds or bruises seem to take longer than usual to heal, your body may be lacking essential nutrients, including Vitamin D. This vitamin supports cellular repair and inflammation control, both crucial for healing. Low levels can delay the regeneration of skin and tissue, making recovery slower even from small injuries. This subtle sign often goes unnoticed because healing still occurs, just not optimally. Over time, delayed healing can reflect deeper issues related to immune and tissue health. 6. Hair Thinning Or Increased Hair Fall While hair fall has many causes, Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to weakened hair follicles and slower hair growth cycles. People may notice increased shedding or thinning over time rather than sudden hair loss. Vitamin D supports follicle health and cellular regeneration. When levels are low, hair growth may become less consistent, making strands appear weaker or finer. Addressing nutritional balance often improves overall hair strength and scalp health, supporting natural growth patterns. 7. Muscle Weakness Or Reduced Strength Subtle muscle weakness, such as difficulty climbing stairs or feeling less physically capable, can be another quiet signal of low Vitamin D. This vitamin is essential for muscle function and coordination. Without it, muscles may feel heavy or less responsive, increasing the risk of strain or imbalance. This weakness may be mistaken for inactivity or ageing, but nutritional support can significantly improve strength and mobility over time.

'Fake' Pizza Hut Inaugurated In Pakistan, Defence Minister's Video Of Ribbon-Cutting Goes Viral

Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif confidently inaugurated what appeared to be a new Pizza Hut outlet in Sialkot’s cantonment area. The ribbon-cutting ceremony proceeded without a hitch until the global fast-food brand stepped in to say the outlet had no legal connection to it. The embarrassment unfolded after images and videos of the event spread rapidly on social media. Users soon noticed that while the outlet carried Pizza Hut’s signature red-roof branding, the Sialkot location did not appear on Pizza Hut Pakistan’s official list of stores, raising doubts about its authenticity. Brands. The statement further stressed that the outlet did not adhere to Pizza Hut International’s recipes, quality controls, food safety norms or operational standards. The US-based chain also confirmed that it had lodged a complaint with the concerned authorities to prevent misuse of its trademark and to seek swift action. Online Backlash What was meant to be a high-profile inauguration quickly became fodder for online ridicule. Social media users mocked the apparent lack of due diligence before a senior minister attended the event. “One ribbon cut, one clarification issued, must be a new record,” a user quipped. Another joked, “When even Pizza Hut says, ‘That’s not our slice.’” “Only in Pakistan can a defence minister inaugurate a fake Pizza Hut,” one user wrote, calling the episode impossible to parody. Another comment in Urdu summed up the public mood, questioning whether anything genuine was left anymore and lamenting the state of leadership.

Pakistan Defence Minister Inaugurates 'Fake Pizza Hut’ In Sialkot, Gets Trolled Online

Floral arrangements, a red carpet and rolling cameras set the stage as Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif confidently cut the ribbon at what appeared to be a new Pizza Hut outlet in Sialkot’s cantonment area. The ceremony unfolded without incident — until the American multinational restaurant chain stepped in to say the outlet was not its own. The controversy erupted after photos and videos of the event went viral on social media, showing the senior minister inaugurating the outlet amid applause. Soon after, Pizza Hut clarified that the Sialkot location was “unauthorised and fraudulent,” triggering widespread ridicule and questions over how such a high-profile event went ahead without verification. Pizza Hut Issues Clarification After Viral Videos Though the outlet prominently displayed Pizza Hut’s signature red roof logo and branding, social media users were quick to notice that the Sialkot location did not appear on Pizza Hut Pakistan’s official store list. The discrepancy prompted the company to issue a formal statement distancing itself from the outlet. “Pizza Hut Pakistan informs our valued customers that an unauthorised outlet falsely using the Pizza Hut name and branding has recently opened in Sialkot Cantonment,” the statement said. The company added that the outlet had no affiliation with Pizza Hut Pakistan or its parent company, Yum! Brands. According to the statement, the outlet did not follow Pizza Hut International’s recipes, quality controls, food safety measures or operational standards. The company said it had filed a formal complaint with relevant authorities to halt the misuse of its trademark and seek immediate action. Social Media Mocks High-Profile ‘Inauguration’ The clarification swiftly turned the ribbon-cutting ceremony into fodder for online satire. Social media users expressed disbelief that a senior cabinet minister had inaugurated an outlet later declared fake by the brand itself. “One ribbon cut, one statement issued. That has to be some kind of record,” one user wrote. Another quipped, “When even Pizza Hut says, ‘Not our slice of the pie.’” Others were less amused. “Only in Pakistan can a Defence Minister proudly inaugurate a fake Pizza Hut,” a user wrote, calling the episode impossible to parody. An Urdu post summed up the frustration more bluntly: “Is there anything real left anymore in this country?”

VinFast VF 6, VF 7 Secure 5-Star Rating Under Bharat NCAP: All You Need To Know

VinFast’s VF 6 and VF 7 electric SUVs have received five-star safety ratings under India’s Bharat New Car Assessment Programme, according to results released on January 21. The certification places both models among vehicles that meet the highest safety benchmarks currently assessed under the government-backed programme. Bharat NCAP evaluates vehicles sold in India across multiple crash test scenarios and assigns ratings based on adult and child occupant protection. The programme follows testing protocols aligned with international safety assessment frameworks. Detailed Scores Across Occupant Protection Categories As per the official assessment, the VinFast VF 6 scored 27.13 out of 32 points in Adult Occupant Protection and 44.41 out of 49 points in Child Occupant Protection. The VinFast VF 7 recorded 28.54 points for Adult Occupant Protection and 45.25 points for Child Occupant Protection. In frontal impact tests, protection for the head, neck and upper legs of both the driver and front passenger in both models achieved the maximum score of 4.000 points. Side impact tests also resulted in full scores, with adult occupant protection marked at 16.000 out of 16.000 and child occupant protection at 8.000 out of 8.000. Pole Side Impact & Test Benchmarks The pole side impact test, which measures head injury risk in severe collisions, recorded values of 109 for the VF 6 and 131 for the VF 7. Both figures were well below the Bharat NCAP critical threshold of 700, indicating compliance with prescribed safety limits. Bharat NCAP, introduced by the Government of India, awards ratings ranging from three to five stars. A five-star rating signifies that a vehicle has met the highest safety standards under the current evaluation criteria for the Indian market. VinFast has previously received safety recognition in other regions. The VF 8, another model from the manufacturer, secured a five-star rating under ASEAN NCAP and received multiple safety-related awards in 2024. Vinfast's India Plans Commenting on the results, Tapan Ghosh, CEO of VinFast India, said, “The 5-star safety ratings awarded to VF 6 and VF 7 by Bharat NCAP mark an important milestone, underscoring the quality and high safety standards of VinFast’s electric vehicles in India, one of the world’s largest automotive markets. Both models are built on an electric vehicle platform rated five stars under Bharat NCAP and are equipped with seven airbags. Depending on the variant, features include advanced driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist and blind spot detection. The two SUVs form part of VinFast’s broader electric vehicle strategy in India, which includes local manufacturing, retail operations, charging infrastructure and aftersales support.

'Family Comes First', Netherlands Boss’s Reply To Work From Home Request Wins The Internet

At a time when balancing professional responsibilities and personal life has become increasingly difficult for many, a story from abroad has struck a chord with thousands. It is the experience of Ashwini Thamke, an Indian professional working in the Netherlands, whose account is both deeply emotional and a powerful example of what a sensitive and supportive workplace culture can look like. A Sudden Family Emergency Ashwini was working in the Netherlands when her family in India was hit by an unexpected and serious medical emergency. The situation was urgent, leaving her with little choice but to return to India immediately. Amid the stress and uncertainty, one concern weighed heavily on her mind: how would she explain the situation to her office and manager? Like many professionals who have worked in India, Ashwini feared uncomfortable questions. She worried about how her request for leave or the possibility of working from home would be received, and whether it might create tension or put her job at risk. Gathering The Courage To Speak To Her Manager After reaching India, Ashwini contacted her manager and openly explained her family situation. She asked whether it would be possible for her to work temporarily from Mumbai. Deep down, she was prepared for the possibility that she might be forced to choose between her job and her family. What followed, however, was something she did not expect. A Response That Won Hearts Ashwini’s manager responded with immediate understanding and empathy. Without hesitation, he told her that she could work from India if she felt capable. At the same time, he made it clear that if she needed to step away from work entirely, she should take leave without any hesitation. The message was simple and reassuring: family comes first, and there was no need to worry about work. For Ashwini, the response was a huge relief. She later shared that during the conversation, her well-being and mental health were given more importance than deadlines or deliverables. A Contrast With Typical Workplace Experiences Reflecting on the incident, Ashwini said the reaction felt entirely new to her. In many Indian workplaces, employees often hesitate to ask for leave even during emergencies, fearing damage to their reputation, career growth, or job security. Coming from that background, the trust and humane treatment she received in the Netherlands left her emotional. It reinforced her belief that work-life balance there is not just a buzzword, but something that is genuinely practiced. Story Goes Viral On Social Media Ashwini shared her experience on Instagram, where the post quickly went viral and sparked widespread discussion. Many users praised the work culture in the Netherlands, while others pointed out that they, too, had encountered supportive managers in India. Several commenters noted that a healthy work environment depends less on geography and more on leadership and team mindset. Many also agreed that empathy and respect motivate employees far more effectively than financial incentives alone.

'Intimate' Wash Products And Cervical Health: Should They Be On Your Washroom Racks?

(Dr. Preety Aggarwal) Conversations around intimate hygiene remain limited, and the use of external products to maintain it is still widely debated. As we step into Cervical Health Awareness Month, it becomes crucial to understand the potency of marketed intimate wash products and whether they truly deserve a place on our washroom racks. To begin with, the female genital tract has a natural flora of microbes, both beneficial and harmful, much like the gut microbiome. The bacteria naturally present in the genital tract help maintain a healthy pH and prevent the growth of unwanted germs. This brings us to an important question: Do we really need external cleansing solutions, or does the genital tract clean itself? ALSO READ: How Stress Affects Reproductive Health And Menstrual Balance? Know The Hidden Link Science Behind Natural Cleansing To clarify, the vagina is the internal part of the female genital tract, while the vulva forms the external. The vulvar pH typically ranges between 3.5–4.7 and the vaginal pH can vary based on age, menstruation, hormonal changes, and other factors. The pH of the genital tract plays a crucial role in determining how susceptible a person may be to infections or the growth of harmful microbes. Studies show that beneficial bacteria residing in the genital tract produce substances that inhibit the growth of yeast and other harmful microorganisms. They also act as a protective barrier against potentially harmful foreign bodies that may invade the genital tract. So yes, the vagina is biologically well equipped to clean itself. Do We Really Need 'Intimate' Wash Products? Many healthcare providers are increasingly recognising that these external solutions may cause more harm than good. 'Intimate' or 'feminine' wash products are lab-made solutions often marketed as cleansers similar to soaps or shampoos. However, unlike skin and hair, the vagina is a self-cleaning organ. The use of external chemicals, even those labelled mild, can disrupt the natural microbiome, increasing the risk of conditions such as bacterial vaginosis. They may also cause dryness, itching, irritation, and sometimes unusual discharge with a distinct odor. When the pH balance is disturbed, the likelihood of developing yeast infections increases. Most experts agree that plain water is sufficient to clean the external genital area by flushing away sweat and surface bacteria. For those who still choose to use intimate wash products, their use should be limited and cautious. Could The Problem Be Cultural? Growing research suggests that many people purchase intimate wash products due to the desire for a perfumed, 'fresh' scent. Healthcare experts, however, emphasise that it is completely normal for the genital tract to have a unique, musky scent. In fact, this natural odor plays a protective role. The desire to use these products is therefore often driven by societal standards and stigma rather than medical necessity. If you notice a significant change in the colour, consistency, or odor of vaginal discharge, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Is Jaggery Really Healthier Than Sugar? Know Its Benefits, Digestion And Hidden Concerns

(By Dt. Sujatha Stephen RD) January often brings with it a renewed focus on health and tradition. In many Indian households, sweets prepared during winter season highlight one ingredient in particular: jaggery (gur). From sesame laddus and peanut chikki to variety of laddus, jaggery is the preferred sweetener, replacing refined sugar in countless recipes. ALSO READ: How Stress Affects Reproductive Health And Menstrual Balance? Know The Hidden Link Why Jaggery Feels Healthier Jaggery is an unrefined sweetener made by boiling sugarcane juice or palm sap. Unlike white sugar, it retains molasses, which contains small amounts of minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium and calcium. Jaggery provides quick energy from carbohydrates along with small amounts of essential minerals. This makes it suitable during colder months, when the body’s energy requirements naturally increase. Traditional Sankranti foods combine jaggery with nuts and seeds, offering healthy fats and complex carbohydrates that help generate warmth and provide sustained energy.  Role Of Jaggery In Your Digestion One of the key advantages of jaggery over sugar is digestion. Jaggery is known to stimulate digestive enzymes, helping reduce bloating and constipation. It is also traditionally consumed after meals to aid digestion. Jaggery contains iron, which can help support haemoglobin levels and may be beneficial for people prone to mild anaemia when consumed in moderation. Jaggery – A Immunity Booster Jaggery is also believed to support immunity due to the presence of antioxidants and minerals like zinc. During seasonal changes, small amounts of jaggery may help the body cope better with cold, cough and fatigue. However, many popular claims such as “liver detox” or “blood purification” are more traditional beliefs than medically proven facts. Limitations And Quality Concerns Despite its benefits, jaggery is still a form of sugar. Calorie-wise, it is similar to refined sugar and can raise blood glucose levels. While it has a slightly lower glycaemic index than sugar, diabetics, people with obesity, PCOD or insulin resistance should consume it cautiously and only after consulting their doctor.  Another important concern is quality. Nowadays adulterated jaggery made with chemicals or artificial colours is common in the market. Always choose organic, unadulterated jaggery from trusted sources. Enjoy The Sweetness Of Jaggery, But Don’t Overdo..!! Jaggery is nutritionally better than refined sugar and fits well into traditional Sankranti sweets when eaten in moderation. It should replace sugar, not be added in excess. Enjoy winter sweets in moderation, and try to pair jaggery with nuts or fibre-rich foods. We should always remember that even natural sweeteners should be eaten in limited amounts. Dt.
