Trump Says Putin Agreed To Week-Long Ceasefire In Ukraine Amid Extreme Cold

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to temporarily pause strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities for a week due to extreme cold weather conditions across the region. Addressing a Cabinet meeting, Trump said he directly reached out to the Russian leader and urged him to halt attacks on the Ukrainian capital and surrounding towns, citing humanitarian concerns linked to what he described as “extraordinary cold.” "I personally asked President Putin not to fire into Kyiv and various towns for a week, and he agreed to do that," Trump said. Trump said several people had advised him against making the call, describing the outcome as unexpected. "A lot of people said, 'Don't waste the call, you're not going to get that.' And he did it," he added. Trump Cites Cold Weather As Reason For Pause Trump reiterated that the decision was driven by the harsh winter conditions prevailing in the region, saying Putin agreed to the request because of the impact on civilians. "Because of the cold, extreme cold... I personally asked President Putin not to fire on Kyiv and the cities and towns," Trump said while speaking at a Cabinet meeting to discuss the US government shutdown. He added that Putin agreed to the pause. "It was very nice". "Because on top of everything else, it's not what they need, missiles coming to their towns [when it is this cold]," he said. Calling the development significant, Trump said Ukraine reacted positively to the decision. "I thought It was a very good thing. Ukraine almost did not believe it and they were very happy to hear it as they are struggling very badly," the US President added. Strikes Continues Despite Diplomatic Signals Trump’s remarks come even as fighting continues on the ground. Ukrainian officials on Thursday said three people were killed in an overnight Russian drone attack in the southern Zaporizhzhia region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also warned that Russia could be preparing for another major assault. The developments are unfolding ahead of US-mediated peace talks expected to take place over the weekend. Russia Invites Zelenskyy For Talks In Moscow In a parallel diplomatic move, Russia has invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Moscow for negotiations aimed at ending the nearly four-year-long conflict, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday. The proposal follows last week’s first trilateral meeting involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States in Abu Dhabi. Speaking to TASS, Peskov said Moscow is being considered as the potential venue for the discussions. This marks the second consecutive day that senior Kremlin officials have signalled readiness to host Zelenskyy for peace talks. On Wednesday, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said Ukraine’s leader would be welcome in Moscow if he agrees to meet. Ushakov also said Russia would ensure Zelenskyy’s security and provide all necessary arrangements for the talks should he accept the invitation, according to Russia Today.

Trump Threatens 50% Aircraft Tariff, Escalates Trade Standoff With Canada

President Donald Trump on Thursday intensified an already strained trade relationship with Canada, warning that aircraft sold into the United States could face a hefty 50 percent tariff. The threat marks a sharp escalation in his ongoing dispute with Ottawa and adds fresh pressure to bilateral ties as frictions with Prime Minister Mark Carney deepen. The announcement came via social media, days after Trump floated an even more severe measure—suggesting a 100 percent tariff on Canadian imports if the country moved ahead with a trade agreement with China. Canada has since completed that deal, though Trump did not specify when or how the proposed penalties might take effect. Tariff Threat Linked To Jet Certification Dispute According to the president, the latest warning is directly tied to Canada’s refusal to certify certain business jets produced in the United States. Trump said Ottawa declined to approve aircraft built by Gulfstream Aerospace at its Savannah, Georgia facility, prompting a retaliatory response from Washington. On Truth Social, Trump posted, "Based on the fact that Canada has wrongfully, illegally, and steadfastly refused to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 Jets, one of the greatest, most technologically advanced airplanes ever made, we are hereby decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses, and all Aircraft made in Canada, until such time as Gulfstream, a Great American Company, is fully certified, as it should have been many years ago." “If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50 percent tariff on any and all aircraft sold into the United States of America,” Trump wrote, as quoted by PTI. He went further, stating that the U.S. would move to decertify Canadian-made aircraft in response. Among those singled out were Bombardier’s Global Express business jets, which Trump said were “hereby decertified.” Bombardier In Crosshairs Again The decision could have wide-reaching implications for the aviation industry. Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows that 150 Bombardier Global Express aircraft are currently registered in the United States and operated by 115 different companies. Any disruption to their certification status could ripple through corporate aviation, leasing firms, and maintenance providers. As of Thursday evening, Bombardier had not issued a public response to the president’s remarks. Canada’s transport ministry also declined to comment immediately, leaving uncertainty over how Ottawa may counter the latest U.S. move. A Familiar Trade Flashpoint This is not the first time Bombardier has been drawn into U.S.-Canada trade tensions. During Trump’s first term in 2017, the U.S. Commerce Department imposed duties on Bombardier’s commercial passenger jets, arguing the company benefited from Canadian government subsidies and sold aircraft below cost. That case ultimately fell apart when the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled that the imports had not harmed American manufacturers.

US Issues Stark Warning To Iran Over Nuclear Ambition, EU Designates IRGC Terrorist Organisation

The United States delivered a blunt warning to Iran on Thursday as senior officials underscored President Donald Trump’s uncompromising military posture, amid a visible expansion of American naval and air power across the Middle East. The show of force comes against the backdrop of mounting concerns over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. Speaking during a Cabinet meeting, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth framed Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons as an unacceptable red line, insisting the administration was prepared to act decisively. “They should not pursue nuclear capabilities, and we will be prepared to deliver whatever this president expects of the War Department,” he said, signalling a readiness to escalate if required. US Projects Strength, Signals Global Resolve Hegseth’s remarks were part of a broader message aimed at reinforcing US military readiness and restoring deterrence in a region on edge. To underline American capabilities, he pointed to the recent capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, describing the operation as unprecedented in both scope and execution. “No other military in the world could have executed the most sophisticated, powerful raid, not just in American history, I would say in world history,” Hegseth said. He added that such an operation reflected the level of authority granted to US forces under the current administration, arguing that “no other president would have been willing to empower those warriors that way.” According to Hegseth, high-profile missions of this nature are designed to send an unmistakable signal beyond Washington. “That sends a message to every capital around the world that when President Trump speaks, he means business,” he said, adding that the War Department was “reestablishing deterrence” after years of what he characterised as strategic ambiguity. Turning back to Iran, Hegseth cited Operation Midnight Hammer, a series of Trump-ordered strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, as proof of the administration’s determination to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. “We’re having to rebuild how our enemies perceive us,” he said. “And when President Trump said, ‘We’re not getting a nuclear Iran, you won’t have a nuclear bomb,’ he meant it.” EU Designates IRGC Terrorist Organisation The tough rhetoric from Washington coincided with a significant shift in Europe’s approach to Iran. European Union foreign ministers agreed to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation, placing it alongside groups such as Islamic State and al Qaeda, The Times of Israel reported. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas reacted sharply to the move, writing on X: “Repression cannot go unanswered.” She added that “any regime that kills thousands of its own people is working toward its own demise.” Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar called the decision “historic,” while an Israeli official said the designation would make it easier to prosecute IRGC members, according to the report. Formed in the wake of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution to protect the Shi’ite clerical system, the IRGC has grown into one of the most powerful institutions in the country. It holds vast influence over Iran’s economy and armed forces and oversees key elements of its ballistic missile and nuclear programmes. While some EU states had long pressed for the designation, others had been reluctant, fearing it could derail dialogue with Tehran and endanger European citizens. That resistance weakened after a violent crackdown on nationwide anti-regime protests earlier this month that reportedly left thousands dead, The Times of Israel said.
