NYT Connections Answers Today (June 20): Having Trouble? Here's How To Spot The Hidden Theme

NYT Connections Answers: The New York Times’ daily word puzzle Connections served up another tricky challenge for players on Friday, June 20. Known for its mix of clever wordplay and deceptive red herrings, today’s puzzle left many scratching their heads — especially when it came to cracking the elusive purple category.

Connections asks players to sort a set of 16 seemingly unrelated words into four groups of four, based on hidden common themes. What may initially appear random — like “Rock”, “Seal”, “Thread”, or “Hitman” — actually masks a logical link that binds the words together.

A single mistake may not cost much, but after four incorrect attempts, the game ends automatically and the answers are revealed. The colored difficulty scale adds another layer of strategy, with Yellow denoting the easiest grouping and Purple reserved for the trickiest.

As the official guide explains: “Those four themes can be confusing, especially the purple one, as it's always using hidden words, missing letters, and obscure associations.”

    Today’s Four Hidden Themes Revealed

For June 20, the puzzle words were: Rock, Film, Seal, Scissors, Poetic, Paper, Button, Museum, Snake, Shoot, Thread, Hitman, Record, Needle, Undertaker, and Tape. Once players pieced together the connections, today’s themes were finally uncovered:

    • Yellow: Items In A Sewing Kit — Button, Needle, Scissors, Thread
    • Green: Capture On Video — Film, Record, Shoot, Tape
    • Blue: Pro Wrestling Icons, With "The" — Hitman, Rock, Snake, Undertaker
    • Purple: Wax ___ — Museum, Paper, Poetic, Seal

For many, identifying pro wrestling nicknames hidden in plain sight was both a surprise and a delight.

Hints That Helped (And Some That Didn’t)

To aid those stuck midway, hints were provided:

    • For Yellow: “Needed to mend clothes.”
    • For Green: “Find other words for 'capturing'.”
    • For Blue: “They're related to wrestling.”
    • For Purple: “Think of a material.”

Further nudges included the extra clue: “Every group contains one word starting with an 'S',” as well as, “There are people in today's puzzle.”

The NYT guide teased: “Grab some hints below and give it another go. Of course, we'll reveal the full Connections answers too.”

Why Purple Remains The Toughest Nut To Crack

As always, Purple proved to be the stumbling block for many. Unlike the straightforward “Sewing Kit” or “Capture On Video” groups, the “Wax ___” theme required lateral thinking, with words like “Museum” and “Poetic” less obviously linked by the shared prefix.

The creators warn players to “be wary, because a lot of the time there are deceptive red herring connections placed purely to throw you off!”

    A Puzzle That Rewards Persistence

Whether you breezed through or got stumped, today's puzzle once again demonstrated why Connections remains a fan favourite for word game lovers everywhere. Its perfect blend of logic, language, and occasional trickery keeps players coming back daily for more brain-teasing fun.
