When Is Muharram 2025 In India?

As per the Islamic lunar calendar, Muharram starts with the sighting of the moon. In 2025, Muharram is expected to begin on 27 June 2025, depending on moon sighting. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, may be observed on Sunday, 6 July 2025. However, the exact date will be officially confirmed once the crescent moon is sighted.

Is Muharram A Month Or A Festival?

Many non-Muslims often get confused, Is Muharram a festival or a month?

Here’s the answer: Muharram is a month, the first month of the Islamic New Year. The significant observance happens on the 10th day, known as Ashura, which is commonly referred to as Muharram by many. On this day, Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was martyred in the Battle of Karbala along with his 72 companions. That is why Muharram is not celebrated with joy but remembered with deep sorrow, sacrifice, and respect.

Why Is Muharram Observed With Mourning?

Muharram is observed around 20 days after Eid-al-Adha (Bakrid). It is believed that during this month, Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was killed while standing for truth and justice. In remembrance of his martyrdom, Muslims across the world perform mourning rituals, take out Tazia processions, and offer prayers in his memory.
